Veteran Killed in Stavropol Explosion; Terrorism Probe Underway
An explosion occurred in Stavropol overnight into Thursday, May 29, 2025, killing two people, the state news agency TASS reported.

Details of the Stavropol Blast
The explosion happened near residential building 85/19 on Chekhov Street. City Mayor Ivan Ulyanchenko reported the incident around 1:00 a.m. Moscow time.
According to preliminary data, the residential building sustained no external damage. However, several vehicles parked nearby were damaged.
About the Victims
Zaur Gurtsiev was 34 years old. In 2012, he graduated from the Budyonny Military Academy of Communications in St. Petersburg, specializing in radio communication, broadcasting, and television.
According to the press service of the Stavropol administration, Gurtsiev had served in the Russian Armed Forces since 2007. He was awarded the Order of Courage, the Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" of the I and II degrees, and other decorations.
In September 2024, following his participation in the "Time of Heroes" regional program, Gurtsiev was appointed first deputy head of the city administration. In this role, he was responsible for issues related to the prevention of terrorism and extremism, coordinated the work of the city's public safety committee, and organized the Stavropol anti-terrorism commission.
Stavropol State Agrarian University reported that Gurtsiev had planned a meeting with students shortly before his death.
Investigators identified the second victim of the explosion as a 29-year-old Stavropol resident and acquaintance of Gurtsiev.
Investigation Underway
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code (murder of two persons by a generally dangerous method) and Part 1 of Article 222.1 (illegal acquisition and storage of explosive devices).
Forensic experts are examining the scene of the explosion. A prosecutor's investigation has also been initiated.
Law Enforcement Versions
The press service of the regional Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee stated that the explosion was carried out using an improvised explosive device (IED).
According to the Stavropol Krai governor, all possible versions are being considered, including the organization of a terrorist act linked to Ukraine.
