Powerful Geomagnetic Storm Hits Earth; Russian Scientists Forecast Extended Period of Unstable Conditions

Magnitude of the Magnetic Storm

According to scientists, the peak fluctuations in the Earth's magnetic field were marked between 3:00 and 6:00 MST. They reached a G3 level, which corresponds to a strong storm.

Current Geomagnetic Situation

As of 7:00-8:00 MST, the situation had stabilized to the level of minor disturbances in the geomagnetic field. However, there is a high likelihood of repeated eruptions throughout the day, experts note.

Magnetic Storm Forecast For the Coming Days

The Solar Astronomy Laboratory warns that the Earth will be in a zone of significantly increased solar wind speed until the end of this week. This dramatically increases the likelihood of magnetic storms and geomagnetic disturbances.

As scientists explain, there are now several coronal holes on the Sun, the magnetic fields of which form one large disturbance area. Its internal architecture hampers accurate diagnostics and understanding of subsequent events.

Only the overall extent of the solar wind in which the planet has found itself can be assessed. Based on this, scientists predict that a period of unstable geomagnetic conditions will last from three to five days.

The Solar Astronomy Laboratory of IKI RAS and ISZF RAS note that the solar wind speed currently fluctuates in the range of 600-800 km/s. This is an extremely high indicator.

Earlier, scientists reported that space weather is determined by a large coronal hole that appeared in the southern hemisphere of the Sun. Earth began entering its activity zone on May 17, 2025. At the time, experts recorded a G2.3 level magnetic storm.
